IFI 8410: Programming for Business

MBA course · Spring 2026 · Instructor of record

J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University

Online and in-person sections

I taught programming as a practical tool for business analysis and decision support. Designed for students with no formal programming prerequisites, the course used Python and Google Colab to connect coding skills with business questions, reproducible analysis, and managerial communication.

Student evaluations

Both sections had 100% response rates. Student evaluations averaged 4.8 out of 5 across seven instructor-specific items.

Course topics

  • Python fundamentals, functions, and data structures.
  • AI-assisted programming (vibe coding): using natural-language prompts to develop and refine code.
  • Data preparation and analysis with NumPy and pandas, including cleaning, combining, and visualizing business data.
  • Working with time-oriented and text data.
  • Introductory machine learning: regression, classification, clustering, and model evaluation.

Applied learning and assessment

Class sessions combined conceptual discussion, live demonstrations, and guided programming practice. Individual assignments reinforced technical skills, while a team-based term project asked students to investigate a business question using real data, submit a reproducible Jupyter notebook, and present findings, limitations, and managerial implications. Peer evaluation recognized individual contributions to team work.

Teaching approach

I emphasized explaining analytical choices as well as implementing them. Students could use AI tools to clarify concepts or debug code, while remaining responsible for understanding and justifying their results. This approach connected technical practice with the judgment and communication skills needed by business professionals.
